I first got into kayaking from my best friend Joel Kowalski at the age of 13. My dad had kayaked in the 80’s and I had grown up near the river, and I had frequently seen kayakers when my mom would take us down to the river. Though it wasn’t until Joel asked if I wanted to learn to kayak with him that I actually got seriously interested in the sport. After 15 minutes in a kayak I was hooked for life.

For anyone who has ever kayaked, you would understand why I do what I do. For everyone else, it is the beautiful scenery and nature at it’s best, the constant challenge of the changing whitewater, the adrenaline rush, the competition, the lifestyle, the possibility to be creative, the flow of the water, and mostly the friendships made for life.

Since that warm summer day on the Ottawa, my kayak has taken me all over the world, from Canada to Australia, to USA, to Zambia and Uganda, to Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, to Mexico and Costa Rica, with many places still to see. Though I always love travelling back to my origins, the Ottawa River. The Ottawa is known for it’s World Class waves and holes, and this freestyle fantasy river has always been my passion.

I made the Jr. Canadian National team for my first time at the age of 15. From there, my competitive nature wanted to keep improving. I won the Sr. Canadian National Championships at the age of 17. From there I went down to Mexico to try my hand at creeking and expedition kayaking with the first full descent of the Rio Alseseca. I then continued to train for Freestyle entering my first World Championships at the age of 18, winning myself a Bronze medal. I continued to train in freestyle and creeking while filming and producing my first kayak film. In the next couple years I kept creeking, filming and competing, while getting a Silver medal at the World Cup, and then a Gold medal at the 2009 World Championships.

From here I have decided to try to get better at some new disciplines for me, such as creek racing and boater-cross, with lots of room for constant improvement. I still focus a lot on freestyle kayaking, and lately I have been trying to link multiple combo moves.

My future plans are to continue having fun while kayaking, to try my hardest at everything I do, and get better at being a more ‘well rounded’ kayaker.
